Puerto Viejo is not Nosara or Tamarindo. There are few yoga retreats here, and many of the programmes sold as yoga retreats are fasting or plant-medicine programmes. These eight are yoga-first, and were open for booking on 13 October 2026.

A short group retreat around breathwork and dynamic yoga at a small eco-hotel in Playa Chiquita. The listing describes a morning post-Ashtanga vinyasa class, functional breathing, pranayama and kriya, and afternoon workshops on movement technique or tantric kriya yoga.

Hotel Casa Merlin, 150 m off the main road in Playa Chiquita. The listing puts Playa Chiquita and Punta Uva 2–5 minutes on foot and Puerto Viejo about 10 minutes by car.

The longest and most unusual programme here: eleven days of morning yoga alongside daily sessions with horses, from groundwork to bareback breathing practice and a swim with the horses in the sea. No yoga or horse experience is needed.

How to choose

Group or private, and what to check

Most of the difference between these retreats is in six details.

Choose a group retreat if

  • You want other guests, shared meals and a set daily rhythm
  • You are happier with a lower price per night
  • You would like surf, horses or workshops as part of the week

Breath & Flow, Tierra de Sueños, Uplift and Kindred Spirits.

Choose a private programme if

  • You want the teachers to set the pace around you
  • You are travelling as a couple or alone and want quiet
  • You are new to yoga and do not want a class of strangers

The two Chandra Karuna programmes and Exhale. Expect a higher price per night.

  • What the meals cover. Included meals run from none (Kindred Spirits) to breakfast only, brunch only, breakfast and dinner, or all three. Eating out in town adds to the total.
  • Where it sits. Playa Chiquita and Punta Uva are quiet and a ride from restaurants. Cocles is close to town and the surf. Playa Negra is a short ride from the centre. Where to stay in Puerto Viejo describes each area.
  • The cancellation terms. Three of the eight keep your deposit if you cancel, at 14% to 50% of the price. Four refund it in full until the day before, and Uplift refunds it by 8 December 2026. Read the terms on the listing at the time you book.
  • Your own transport. Hosts charge from US$60 to US$300 for airport transfers, or include them. San José to Puerto Viejo covers the road options.
  • The season. The South Caribbean does not follow the Pacific coast’s dry and wet pattern. The best time to visit sets it out.
  • What to ask the host. Class size, yoga style and level, what happens in heavy rain, and exactly how many treatments are included.
Left out

What we did not include, and why

The same marketplace category lists much more than yoga. We left these out on purpose.

  • Ayahuasca and plant-dieta programmes. The marketplace lists them under Puerto Viejo yoga retreats. They are not yoga-first, and they raise medical questions a travel guide should not wave through.
  • Multi-week water fasts. Also listed there, up to 21 days, and not yoga retreats either.
  • Teacher trainings. A 200-hour hybrid course appears in the same category. It is a qualification, not a holiday.
  • Sold-out listings. On 13 October 2026 one Chandra Karuna four-day immersion showed no availability, so it is not here.

How much does a yoga retreat in Puerto Viejo cost?

The eight programmes we checked on 13 October 2026 start at US$299 for three nights (Breath & Flow, group) and run to US$3,350 for a five-night group retreat with surf. Private programmes for one person run from US$799 to US$3,200. Prices change with the room type and the number of guests.

Do I need yoga experience?

The listings say no for most. Chandra Karuna lists beginner to advanced levels, Tierra de Sueños beginner and intermediate, Uplift beginner to advanced, and Kindred Spirits says no previous yoga or horse experience is needed.

Are meals included?

It depends on the retreat. Tierra de Sueños, Exhale and The Power of Her include all three meals, Uplift breakfast and dinner, Breath & Flow a daily brunch and Chandra Karuna breakfast (horseback) or juices (detox). Kindred Spirits includes none.

How do I get to a retreat in Puerto Viejo from San José?

By road it is about 4½ to 5½ hours, according to the listings. Some hosts arrange transfers (US$60 to US$300 per person), and Uplift includes a round-trip airport shuttle. Our San José to Puerto Viejo guide compares buses, shuttles and the Limón flight.
