How to get from the South Caribbean coast to San José’s Juan Santamaría airport (SJO) without cutting the day too fine.

4.5–5 hoursto San JoséThe night beforefor early flights
The short answer

Allow a full day, or sleep close

The coast is about 4.5 to 5 hours from San José by road, and the airport is a further transfer from the city.

Public bus. Direct to San José’s Caribbean-side bus terminal, not to the airport. You then need a taxi or other transfer.
Shuttle. Door-to-door options leave in the morning and early afternoon, and are usually the simplest way to reach the airport.
Our take. Do not book a same-day connection tightly. A late-morning flight is usually easiest if you stay near the airport the night before.
Bus times

Will the bus make my flight?

The local company MEPE runs the route. These are the Puerto Viejo departures as published by a local guide, last confirmed in January 2026. Pick your flight and see which buses work.

The bus arrives at San José’s Atlántico Norte terminal, so the transfer to the airport is on top. Timetables change and some services run only on certain days: confirm with the company or on Puerto Viejo Satellite before you plan around one.

Shuttle or bus

Which one suits you

Both work. The difference is simplicity against flexibility.

Timing your flight

Working backwards

A simple way to plan, using the figures above.

  • Flight check-in. Airlines generally want you at the airport about three hours before an international flight, and check-in can close around an hour before.
  • Drive. Plan for 4.5 to 5 hours from the coast to San José.
  • Transfer. Add the trip from the city to SJO; traffic in San José can be slow.
  • Buffer. Add extra time for the road, which can be delayed by weather or works.
  • Safest plan. Travel the day before for flights before late afternoon.
