A long beach with a small rocky island offshore at Playa Cocles

Costa Rica / Puerto Viejo / 3-day itinerary

Puerto Viejo · 3-day plan

Three days inPuerto Viejo

Town first, coast road second, forest third. Every afternoon left loose.

3 days2 nights minimumBikes+ one bus dayNo carneeded
The plan

Town, coast, then forest

No rental car. You ride bicycles, with one day on the local bus or in a taxi. February to March and September to October give the driest, calmest version.

Town & Cocles

Settle in, don’t rush

The curve of the beach at Playa Cocles
Morning

Arrive and rent bikes

Drop your bags, then rent bikes for the whole stay.

Afternoon

Playa Cocles

Beach time. Swim where the lifeguards are assigned, and ask about the sea before going in.

Evening

Salsa Brava, then dinner

Walk into town to see Salsa Brava breaking, then eat Caribbean: rice and beans in coconut milk, or rondón if a kitchen is making it. Early night.

The coast road

Ride south to the point

The turquoise cove at Punta Uva, with forest down to the sand
Morning

Playa Chiquita

Cycle the flat road south and stop at the small beach entrances.

Keep rolling south

Punta Uva

Swim and snorkel the calm cove, then have a long lunch.

Afternoon

Manzanillo

Carry on for the walk into the refuge toward Punta Mona. It is about 20 minutes from town by local bus if your legs have had enough.

Evening

Back before dark

Tuk-tuk the bikes home if you are tired.

Into the forest

A morning in the park

The sea seen through branches at a viewpoint in Cahuita
Morning

Early bus or taxi to Cahuita

About 25–30 minutes on the local bus. Walk the flat coastal trail from the Kelly Creek gate: sloths and howler monkeys are commonly seen, especially with a guide.

Afternoon

Lunch in the village, then home

Eat in the village, then head back to Puerto Viejo. More in the Cahuita guide and the wildlife guide.

Not a forest person? Swap the park for a locally run cacao morning (book a Bribri visit) or a guided reef snorkel.

Adjust it

Shorter or longer

The shape changes with the time you have.

Keep Day 1 and Day 2.

  • Day 1Town & Cocles
  • Day 2The coast road
  • Day 3Skip the park

If the sea is calm, snorkel the Cahuita reef instead.

Add less, not more.

  • Day 1Town & Cocles
  • Day 2The coast road
  • Day 3Into the forest
  • ExtraA slow beach day at Punta Uva
  • ExtraA locally run cacao morning

Four or five days is room to slow down, not to add more stops.

Base yourself at Cocles.

  • Day 1Town & Cocles
  • Day 2Give it to the water
  • Day 3Into the forest

Keep the park day.

Same shape, shorter reach.

  • Day 1Town & Cocles
