Costa Rica / Puerto Viejo / Getting there
Getting there · Costa Rica
One road east across the country, then south along the coast. However you do it, plan on most of a day.
There is no quick way to the South Caribbean. Every option runs roughly the same 4½ to 5 hours; the difference is comfort, cost and how many other stops you make.
Fares and schedules shift with the season. Treat the numbers as a guide and confirm with the operator before you travel.
Three ways, side by side.

Shuttle. Booked online a day or two ahead: the driver collects you from your San José hotel or from Juan Santamaría airport and drops you at your hotel on the coast. Operators include Interbus and Caribe Shuttle. An airport pickup plus other passengers around San José can stretch the ride, so an early departure is worth it. It removes every hard part: no terminal, no luggage worry, no figuring out the last stretch.
Autotransportes MEPE runs the only direct service, from the Gran Terminal del Caribe (still widely called Terminal MEPE or Terminal Atlántico Norte).

Only the Friday and Saturday noon bus continues to Cocles, Playa Chiquita, Punta Uva and Manzanillo. The other buses continue to Bribri and Sixaola, so if you are staying south of town take that bus, or a taxi or local bus to your hotel. The fare was ₡6,975 in May 2026 (Puerto Viejo Satellite).
The route is Highway 32 east through Braulio Carrillo National Park and Guápiles to Limón, then Highway 36 south along the coast.
The road climbs through cloud forest and is prone to fog, heavy truck traffic and, in hard rain, rockfalls and closures. In case of closures the bus takes a longer route via Turrialba, which adds about an hour.
Once you turn south at Limón the road narrows and the palms close in. The bus stops at Cahuita before Puerto Viejo.
Fully paved. Normal conditions: 4½ to 5 hours.

There is no commercial airport in the South Caribbean. Nearly everyone flies into San José (SJO) and continues by shuttle, bus or car.
The nearest airstrip is in Limón, with only limited domestic service, and you would still drive the last stretch. Going back for a flight? See Puerto Viejo to the airport.
