Puerto Viejo or Cahuita?

Two beach towns about 17 km apart, built around different things. Choose Puerto Viejo for beaches, food and a bike; Cahuita for the national park and a slower pace; or split the stay.

The short answer

Different towns, different trips

Both sit on the same coast road and the same MEPE bus line. They feel nothing alike. Most trips work best with Puerto Viejo as the base and one day in Cahuita for the park. If you want to wake up beside the trail, flip it.

The feelBarefoot and busy: restaurants, bars and bike rentals along one coast road.A small Afro-Caribbean village that runs slowly, with roots in the fishing and farming families who settled here in the 1800s.
BeachesSeveral, from the Cocles surf to the calm coves of Punta Uva and Manzanillo.Playa Blanca inside the park and Playa Negra on the north side of the village. It is a different Playa Negra from Puerto Viejo’s.
Park and wildlifeThe Gandoca-Manzanillo refuge to the south and rescue centres nearby. The Cahuita park is a day trip.Cahuita National Park starts at the edge of the village. Sloths, howler monkeys and coatis are commonly seen.
SnorkellingPunta Uva and Manzanillo on calm days. The Cahuita reef, which the tourism board calls the most preserved on the Costa Rican Caribbean, with an accredited guide by boat.
Food and eveningsThe wider choice on the coast, and more going on at night.A smaller, quieter choice. Our read, not a ranking.

Which one

Choose, then book

A rule of thumb, from the table above.

Choose Puerto Viejo if

  • You want variety: beaches that change every few kilometres
  • Surf, calm coves, cacao farms and a food scene
  • You want the widest choice of places to stay
  • You will have a bike, and three to five nights

The Puerto Viejo guide covers the areas; where to stay helps pick one; which beach for what compares the sand.

Choose Cahuita if

  • You want the park on foot from your hotel
  • A calm village and early starts
  • You are short on time: a night or two, or a day trip
  • You prefer to walk everywhere and skip the bike

The Cahuita guide has the park, the reef and the village in detail.

Splitting a stay

Both, on one bus line

The two are one short ride apart, so a longer trip can use both.

By bus

≈ 25–30 min between the two; about 1,000 colones as of May 2026.

By car or taxi

15–20 minutes.

Day trip

Either direction works, leaving early.

With five nights or more, two in Cahuita and three in Puerto Viejo (or the reverse) works well: the same MEPE line from San José stops at both. With fewer nights, stay in one place and take the other as a day trip. Cahuita is an easy day from Puerto Viejo: the three-day itinerary makes it Day 3.
