How to choose ayoga retreat in Costa Rica.

Six decisions shape a retreat: the format, the balance, the place, what the price covers, the cancellation terms and the reviews. Here is how to weigh each, with real numbers from 15 retreats.

The short answer

Decide in this order

Start with the format and the balance, then the place, then compare what the price covers and how you can cancel. A cheap headline price can cost more by the end of the week than an all-in one.

Six decisions

What actually separates one retreat from another

Each one is something you can read on a listing before you book.

1. Group, small group or private

Listings run from private programmes for one or two guests to group retreats of up to 30. A private house means the teacher sets the pace around you, at a higher price per night. A group means shared meals and a fixed rhythm.

2. Yoga only, or yoga plus something

Some retreats are yoga and breathwork alone. Others add surf, horses, a juice detox or a themed workshop programme. The balance varies: one surf retreat lists five surf lessons and five yoga classes, another a single surf lesson in a wellness week.

3. The coast and the place

The Caribbean and the Pacific have different weather patterns, and each place has its own feel. Our Caribbean retreats cluster around Cocles, Playa Chiquita and Playa Negra; the Pacific ones sit in Nosara, Santa Teresa, Playa Hermosa, Uvita, Osa and Manzanillo in Puntarenas.

4. What the price actually covers

Included meals run from none to three a day. Airport transfers range from included to US$300 per person. Flights and insurance are almost never in the price. Compare the meals and transfers lines, not the headline.

5. The cancellation terms

Some retreats keep a non-refundable deposit of 14% to 50% of the price. Others refund it in full until the day before, or only 60 or more days out. Read the terms on the listing at the moment you book.

6. What the reviews can tell you

Review counts run from 1 to 248, and some ratings belong to the host, not the programme. A new listing with a handful of reviews is not worse, but it is less proven. Ratings are the booking site’s own.

Our arithmetic: the starting price on each listing divided by the number of nights, at the list price rather than any temporary offer. It leaves out meals, transfers and treatments, which is why the table says what each band includes.

Ask the host

Eight questions worth sending

Send them before you book.

  • Which style, and what level? Hatha, vinyasa and yin are not the same class. Ask which one is taught and whether beginners are welcome.
  • How many people? A listing’s group size can mean 2 or 30. Ask the actual number for your dates.
  • What does a normal day look like? Ask for the daily schedule and which parts are optional.
  • What is in the meals line? Ask for the menu style and how dietary needs are handled.
  • What happens in heavy rain? Outdoor shalas and surf lessons depend on the weather. Ask for the rain plan.
  • How do I get there, and what does the transfer cost? Transfers range from included to US$300 per person.
  • What exactly is non-refundable, and until when? Ask for the cancellation terms in writing.
  • Is anything medical? If a programme involves fasting, juice cleanses or intense breathwork, ask your doctor first.
Red flags

What to be careful about

Not a ranking: a short list of things to question.

  • No price, dates or cancellation terms. If a listing will not show these, ask before you spend time on it.
  • Vague inclusions. “Activities” or “treatments” without a number or a duration. Ask how many and how long.
  • Promises of healing. A retreat can give you rest and practice. It cannot promise a cure. Be cautious with medical claims, and with programmes built on fasting or plant medicine.
  • A headline price that hides the extras. A cheap start price with no meals can cost more by the end of the week than an all-in price.

Questions

What people ask first

Short answers, from the listings we checked.

How much does a yoga retreat in Costa Rica cost?

Across the 15 retreats we checked, the starting price works out at about US$100 to US$599 per night, from US$299 for a three-night group stay to US$3,200 for a six-night private house. The table above sorts them by price band.

How long should a first retreat be?

There is no rule. Five of the 15 we checked run four to five days, ten run six days or longer, and the longest is 11 days. A short stay is a cheaper way to see if the format suits you.

Do I need yoga experience?

Not for most. The listings welcome beginners in most cases, and some say no previous experience is needed. Check the level line on the listing you choose.

What is usually not included?

Flights and travel insurance, and often lunch, dinner, excursions and extra treatments. Airport transfers are included in some programmes and cost up to US$300 per person in others.

Should I choose a group or a private retreat?

A group suits you if you want company and a lower price per night. A private programme suits you if you want quiet or a pace set around you. Our two guides list both.

Should I pick the Caribbean or the Pacific coast?

They have different weather patterns: the Exhale listing says the Caribbean, unlike the Pacific, has no distinct dry season. Our best-time guide covers the Caribbean month by month.
